Semi Conductor Manufacturer
Our client is a pioneer and world leader in advanced power management technology, from digital, analog and mixed-signal ICs to advanced circuit devices, power systems and components.
The world’s leading manufacturers of computers, appliances, automobiles, consumer electronics and defense systems rely on the technology to drive the performance and efficiency of their products. Today, power management technology plays a more important role than ever in saving the world’s dwindling energy reserves while tackling tough technology roadblocks.
The Challenge
Our clients power factor sat at 0.65 across 11 transformer incomers. However, due to modern loads and harmonics the existing inoperable standard type power factor correction could not just be renewed within the existing confines of the main switchboards. Our challenge was to upgrade the power factor correction to detuned, which meant the inclusion of filter reactors in series with the capacitors. The problem presented at this site was that there was no available space for the reactors, therefore, a complete redesign was required as there was no room in the substations for new standalone power factor correction.
The Solution
Johnson & Phillips won this project based on our ability to engineer the solution within the existing parameters of the space available to us. We installed over 6,000 kVAr of detuned power factor correction. We mounted the new filter reactors where the capacitors were once sited, fitted new capacitors in fan-cooled enclosures which were mounted on top of the main switchboards. To protect the capacitors and the reactors we fused the cabling between the capacitors and the reactors for additional protection. The complete system was ventilated and forced air cooled to allow the maximum air flow.
